Houghton Lake Community Education (HLCE) was founded in 1987. We are an adult and alternative education school. Alternative education is available for students who are between the ages of 14 and 19 and who have experienced a lack of success in the traditional school setting, but still have the desire to obtain their high school diploma.
Students 18 years and older may enroll in HSE/GED and/or ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes. Students attempting to get their HSE/GED, attend class where they prepare for the four tests they must take to acquire their HSE/GED. Students whose reading and writing skills are below ninth-grade level will be enrolled in ABE classes. ABE classes are offered 5 days a week and students spend time building up their math and reading skills so they will be successful in passing the HSE/GED.
The Houghton Lake Community Education Program is one of Michigan’s official General Education Development (GED) Testing Centers. Testing is done on a group basis throughout the year at the Community Education Building and other local facilities. The GED is commonly referred to as the High School Equivalency Test. It consists of four parts: Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematics.
